     THE EASTERN RAILROAD COMPANY was incorporated April 14, 1836.
     Aug. 27, 1838, the track opened from Boston to Salem.
     Dec. 10, 1839, a branch from Salem to Marblehead.
     Dec. 18, 1839, road opened to Ipswich Depot.
     June 19, 1840, road opened to Newburport.
     Nov. 9, 1840, to the New Hampshire line.


     THE EASTERN RAILROAD runs from Boston through Lynn, Salem and Newburyport, to  Portsmouth, and there connects with the Portland, Saco, and Portsmouth Railroad, extending to Portland. At this place passengers may go by the Portland and Kennebec Railroad to Bath, where a steamboat connects for Gardiner, Hallowell, and by stages for all parts of Maine; or by the Androscoggin and Kennebec Railroad for Readfield, Winthrop, and Waterville, where stages connect for Bangor and all other places on the Penobscot, and Gardiner and Hallowell on the Kennebec, and Thomaston, Camden, Belfast, Frankfort, and Bangor on the Penobscot Rivers.
     The Eastern Road also connects by the Essex Railroad with Danvers, Middleton, Andover, and Lawrence; and by branches with Marblehead, Manchester, Gloucester, Salisbury Mills, Amesbury, Great Falls, the White Mountains, and the interior of New Hampshire and Maine.
     This Railroad affords access to splendid sea-side locations, and passing through many pleasant towns, opens magnificent views of the ocean, and leads to the most retired spots for sea-bathing, and to the finest scenery to be found in the native forests of New England.
     SEASON TICKETS are sold, subject to the following rules and conditions, which form part of the contract of the sale.
     1st. A Season Ticket is good only for the person whose name it bears, and any other person using it will be liable to prosecution for fraud.
     2d. A Season Ticket does not entitle the holder to take any baggage, therefore the company will not be responsible for the loss of it in case of any infringement of this rule.
     3d. All Season Tickets will be given to expire on the last days of August, November, February and May, and at no other time.
     4th. Season Tickets must be renewed on or before the day of expiration, or the regular fare will be collected by the conductor; and no fares so collected through the forgetfulness or negligence of the season ticket pasengers will be refunded.
     5th. Season Ticket holders are required to have their tickets with them for inspection, or pay the regular fare when so required by the conductor.
     Family Tickets, in packages of fifty, each ticket passing one of four persons (all of whom must be members of the immediate family of the purchaser, whose names will be printed in full on the ticket,) will be sold between Boston and the above stations, at 12 1/2 per cent. discount from the regular fares.
