PREFACE.

    In presenting this number of the LYNN DIRECTORY to the public the subscriber deems it proper to state that when he commenced the publication of it, four years ago, he first made amicable and satisfactory arrangements with the previous publishers and all parties concerned, intending to continue to publish it regularly so long as the people of Lynn wanted a good Directory and would extend to him their patronage.

     To this intention he still adheres, feeling that he has thus far made the Directory as correct and reliable as the nature of the work will admit, and that he has been generously sustained.

     A short time since, having already prepared considerable of the miscellaneous information for the sixth edition, he was somewhat surprised, on announcing his intention to commence immediately the canvas for names, to learn that other parties (without an act which common courtesy might have suggested, of at least hinting to him their intentions) had started a similar enterprise, thus placing themselves in direct opposition to the regular publication.

     In this state of affairs, only two courses which might be pursued by him with honor and credit were presented, the one to arrange with the opposition to combine the two interests in one, which course he first tried without success, and the other, which he finally adopted, to proceed with his own regular and legitimate business, unmindful of any opposing interests.
     The results of his labor are now offered to the public in a thoroughly revised and carefully prepared edition of the Directory, containing a considerable increase of names and a new map of the city corrected up to the present time by Alonzo Lewis, Esq.
     Thankful for the liberal patronage thus far extended to him, he hopes ever to merit a continuance of it.                   GEORGE ADAMS.
