PREFACE


     The Citizens of Lynn are now presented with the fifth number of the Directory, thoroughly revised and corrected.
     To the usual variety of information, we have added this year a complete Directory of Swampscott, and a Business Directory of Saugus.
     Our thanks are due to all who have assisted us in preparing the work, and also to the business people for their liberal patronage.

UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT.

     The seventeenth Presidential term of four years began on the 4th of March, 1853, and will expire on the 3d of March, 1857.
     The salary of the President is $25, 000 a year, and the salary of the Vice President and members of the Cabinet is $8000 each.

     CONGRESS - The SENATE is composed of two members elected by the Legislature of each State for the term of six years. Of course the number of Senators is now Sixty-two. The Vice-President of the United States is President of the Senate. In his absence, a President pro tempore is chosen by the Senate.
     THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES is composed of representatives from each in the ratio of one to every 70,680 of the population. The present number of members is two hundred and thirty-four; and there are seven delegates, one each from Oregon, Minnesota, Utah, New Mexico, Washington, Nebraska and Kansas teritories, who have a right to speak, but not to vote. The compensation of the members is $8, and that of the Speaker $16 per day during the session, and $8 for every-twenty miles’ travel in going and returning.
     Presidential election, in each state in the Union, 1st Tuesday in November.

     TRANSIENT NEWSPAPERS, PERIODICALS, UNSEALED CIRCULARS, OR OTHER ARTICLES OF PRINTED MATTER, not exceeding 3 ounces in weight, to any part of the United States, prepaid 1 c., not prepaid 2 c.; each additional ounce or fraction of an ounce, prepaid 1 c., not prepaid, 2 c.
     REGULAR NEWEPAPERS OR PERIODICALS, paid yearly or quarterly in advance, when circulated in the State where published, not weighing over 1 ½ oz., ¼ c.; over 1 ½ oz. and not over 3 oz., ½ c; every additional oz. or fraction, ½ c.
